Preparing Your Home Before You Leave for the Holidays

Published December 6th, 2017 | By

The holiday season is here, which means many of us will be leaving home to travel to various destinations in order to spend time with family and friends. It’s a time of joy and merriment as we enjoy all that we hold dear. Yet in order to truly enjoy the holiday season without stress, one thing that needs to be done before you even leave the house is to prepare your home for your absence.

Many things can occur while you are away—namely a home burglary. Despite what neighborhood you live in, however safe you feel that it is, they can happen to anyone, anywhere. The best strategy to avoid a burglary is to take caution and prepare your home.

The following tips should always be done before you set off for the holidays (and for that matter, any trip that you ever go on):

  1. Don’t share that you are away on social media

First off, you never know who is looking at your posts, which is why you should always use an air of caution anytime you share something on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Even if you have privacy settings where only your friends can view your status updates and pictures, you undoubtedly have people on your friends list or have followers that you hardly know. Avoid any possible trouble by never sharing that you’ve left your home for an extended period of time—even if it’s just for a couple days. People troll social media accounts to find out who will be gone to plan which homes to potentially burglarize.

If you do want to share about your trip on social media, wait to do so after you’ve returned. This will help prevent anything from occurring. And one thing you should also never do is post pictures or status updates where you broadcast what gifts you’ve received. It’s another way of making your home into a potential target. It says “look at what’s inside my home.”

  1. Lock all windows and doors

This sounds common sense, but you’d be surprised to find that people don’t oftentimes double-check that all of their windows and doors are locked. These entry points are where burglars will first check to see if anything is unsecure. Locking everything will make things much more difficult for them to enter—and may give you the time needed for them to second guess whether or not they should try to forcibly enter.

So simply go around each window and make sure the tabs are all in the locked position. And as you go to leave, check that each door is also locked. If you have a garage, make sure you see that it closes all the way before you pull away from your residence.

  1. Set up timers on appliances or use smart home automation features

Ensure that your home doesn’t look vacant. You can do this by setting up timers or even use automation-powered lights that you can use with your ADT Smart Home security system. In using a timer, you can program exact times you’d like lights to go on and off. And with ADT Smart Home, you can turn lights on or off anytime, anywhere with the press of a button. One thing you can always do in addition to these is to keep your outside lights on, in order to keep entryways well lit. This will help to deter possible intruders.

  1. Hold mail and newspaper deliveries

As stated before, you don’t want your home to look like no one is home. Having your mail and newspapers collect and build up is one way of broadcasting that everyone is away. A simple solution to this is to go online or call your newspaper and mail delivery services to hold these deliveries for the length of time that you’ll be away. And once you’ve returned, you can resume getting your deliveries.

Enjoy the holidays without worrying about what’s happening back at home! These tips will properly prepare your home for your absence. A secure home is a safe home. Now get packing!

The Benefits of Having a Smart Home Security System

Published December 5th, 2017 | By

Smart security systems are transforming how homes are both being managed and protected from the inside out. Homeowners and renters alike are able to access and control their security systems within record time— in virtually any physical location. This is something standard systems are unable to provide. These capabilities put homeowners and renters more in control of their home’s security, providing the ultimate piece of mind.

There are several key benefits of having a smart security system, of which complements any home looking to modernize and add unique security features. They are as follows:

  • Additional Security Via Remote Access

Plainly put, remote access allows you to interact with the smart security system without having to physically engage with the control panel. Remote access provides entry to the security system from any location, provided that there is an Internet connection on your smartphone, tablet or computer.

You’ll have to first install your specific system’s mobile app, to access all of the remote security features. So you can be sitting comfortably in your favorite armchair or be all the way across the country, and you can access your security system with the press of your device’s touchscreen or touchpad.

  • Home Automation Abilities

Perhaps of all the advanced features that are included in smart home security systems, home automation is at the top of the list. Home automation lets you automatically (and remotely) do things such as adjust the thermostat, turn on/off the lights, manage appliances as well as lock and unlock doors. Everyday tasks are made easier—and are now hands-free. And since home automation is also managed remotely, you can save money on your energy bills since you have constant control of your household appliances. All you have to do is use your smart security system’s mobile app to gain total access.

  • Remote Video Surveillance

Most smart home security systems provide some combination of indoor and outdoor video cameras. Live video footage can then be viewed remotely on a mobile device at any given time— a great advantage of keeping any home safe. Sometimes having a visual provides more peace of mind than any other form of security protection.

  • Increases a Home’s Desirability

Smart technology is here to stay. Homes everywhere are utilizing smart home features for everyday tasks, so it goes to say that the more advanced a home becomes, the more desirable it gets—regardless of whether that home is being placed on the market or not. The home value simply increases overall. So when you mix advanced smart technology with home security, you are enhancing the demand of the home.
